Our goals in genetic innovation
Breeding
A fundamental component for the company is the genetic improvement activity carried out on baby leaf and onion products.
A young and dynamic team works to develop varieties with high added value, thanks to the introgression of genetic resistances to the main pathogens, to the selection of genotypes suitable for different cultivation areas and flexible to the different production needs.
Not only that, but particular attention is given to the introduction of innovative phenotypic traits, to the nutraceutical component and to the shelf-life of the product.
Shelf life
An improved shelf-life has now become a fundamental requirement in the selection phase that allows to have not only in the field, but also in processing and conservation a more stable and qualitatively superior product.
Through proprietary techniques we select lines with increased shelf life and with structural features of the raised leaf.
Resistance to plant diseases
A fundamental aspect of the Maraldi seeds signed breeding activity is the selection of genotypes resistant to some of the most important fungal pathogens such as downy mildew and fusarium. In fact, every year hundreds of downy mildew resistance tests are carried out at the Maraldi laboratory, both on lettuce (bremia lactucae) and rocket (peronospora parasitica) so that a range of varieties can be proposed ranging from complete resistance to bremia lactucae and varieties with excellent tolerance with regard to wild rocket.
Additional screenings are conducted for the selection of fusarium-tolerant varieties in lettuce, rocket and onion.
F1 Hybrids
Maraldi seeds work to offer products with ever greater vigor and uniformity.
Products that show the optimal balance between the parameters sought and that are highly adaptable to specific production areas.
